Why I Don't Offer Mini Sessions as a Regular Package (And What You Need to Know Before You Ask)

As a photographer, one of the most common questions I get asked is:
“Do you offer mini sessions as one of your regular packages?”
While I totally understand why this question comes up—often because clients are looking for a shorter (and sometimes more affordable) option—there’s a good reason why I don’t regularly offer mini sessions.
Let me break it down, not just from a business standpoint but also from a creative and client experience perspective.
1. Shorter Time Doesn’t Mean Less Work
It might seem like a 30-minute session should cost half as much as a one-hour one, but it doesn’t work that way behind the scenes. Whether I’m shooting for 30 minutes or 60, I still spend time:
• Prepping and planning the session
• Culling through all the images (yes, even the ones we shot in a shorter window)
• Editing and retouching
• Communicating and delivering the final gallery
No matter how long we shoot, the backend work is nearly identical. So, when you cut the session time in half, you’re not cutting the workload in half, and offering that kind of discount simply isn’t sustainable for small businesses like mine.
2. Mini Sessions Can Feel Rushed and Stressful
Here’s the thing: most people aren’t comfortable in front of the camera right away. It takes time to warm up, settle in, and get those genuine, candid moments that make your photos feel like you.
Trying to squeeze all of that into 30 minutes often leaves everyone—myself included—feeling rushed and stressed. We end up racing the clock to “get all the shots,” which takes away from the fun, relaxed vibe that leads to beautiful, meaningful photos.
And when you’re investing in memories, the last thing you want is to feel like you’re on a tight timeline.
3. Mini Sessions Have Their Place—but They’re Not One-Size-Fits-All
Don’t get me wrong—I do offer mini sessions occasionally! But here’s the key difference: they’re designed for very specific setups (like holiday-themed sessions or quick milestone photos), they happen on pre-scheduled dates, and I batch multiple clients in one location, back-to-back.
That’s what makes them work logistically and financially.
But for full family sessions, engagements, maternity photos, or anything that deserves space to breathe and unfold naturally, mini sessions just don’t deliver the same experience or results.
4. What You’re Investing In
At the end of the day, photography isn’t just about time—it’s about experience, creativity, and connection. When you book a full session, you’re giving yourself room to relax, explore, and create photos that feel like you. That kind of quality can’t be rushed, and I’d never want to compromise the standard I hold for your memories.

So next time you’re wondering why photographers don’t just offer “cheaper” or shorter sessions all the time, know that it’s not about being inflexible. It’s about ensuring that your investment is worth it and that you walk away with a gallery of photos that you’re proud of.
If you ever want to chat about what type of session is best for your needs, I’m always happy to talk it through!
