“You’re Too Expensive” — A Photographer’s Honest Response

There’s a quote I love that I heard recently in response to the question, “Could you charge less?”
The answer? “I could charge more.”
That line stuck with me because it’s not about being defensive, it’s about being confident in the value you bring to the table.
Now and then, I’ll hear this from a potential client: “You’re too expensive.”
And I get it. Photography is an investment. But here’s the thing—when someone says that to me, what they often mean is: “I wasn’t expecting to pay that much,” or “I’m not ready to invest in that right now.” And that’s okay. Truly. Not everyone is my client, and I’m not meant to be everyone’s photographer.
But let me say this: I’m not “too expensive.” My pricing reflects the time, talent, gear, editing, experience, and emotional energy I bring to every session. I’ve spent years honing my craft, building systems that serve my clients well, and creating work that feels timeless and meaningful. When you hire me, you’re not just paying for photos—you’re investing in an experience that captures your most important moments with care, creativity, and intention.
When I first started my business, I had a conversation with my mother-in-law, who is a jeweller. I remember her telling me that any time a potential client asked about pricing, she always encouraged them to shop around first. Not because she was unsure of her work, but because she was sure. She wanted people to see the full scope of what was out there and then decide for themselves what was worth investing in. I’ve carried that into my photography business ever since. Sometimes, people genuinely don’t know what quality photography should cost—and that’s okay, too.
You’re paying for:
• My time before, during, and after your session
• Professional equipment and software
• Years of experience posing, guiding, and styling
• My artistic eye and editing expertise
• A smooth, organized client experience
• The irreplaceable value of quality, emotion-filled memories preserved forever
There are photographers at every price point—and that’s the beauty of the market. But if someone quotes you a lower price, there’s probably a difference in what they’re offering. And that’s not shade—it’s just reality. Cheaper isn’t always better, just like more expensive doesn’t always mean “best.” You simply have to decide what matters most to you.
To my clients who trust me with their memories, thank you. Your belief in my work and your willingness to invest in it mean the world to me. And to those who don’t choose me, I still wish you the most beautiful photos and heartfelt experiences with the photographer who’s the right fit for you.
Because at the end of the day, I know my worth. I’m not too expensive. I’m just not cheap—and there’s a difference.
